Basic HTML

You will need a “text editor”.  This is just geek speak for something to type into.
In the real world we would use a piece of paper. That could be considered a text editor.
With Windows computers we use something like “Notepad”.  This can found in the “Accessories” section.
Start –> All Programs –> Accessories –> Notepad

I think a much better option is Notepad++. This is a free tool and has more features than regular notepad.

You don’t want to use Open Office Write or Word or anything like these. They add formatting to the page that isn’t needed
and can complicate things later.

Here is how to write a basic HTML page.

First we declare the document type like this.

This goes at the very top of your page.

<!DOCTYPE html>

After this we start a new line.

<html>
<head>
<title>My First Web Page</title>
</head>
<body>
This is my first page.  Now I’m going to learn some CSS to make things look a little better.
</body>
</html>

Now we save this as an HTML page.

When we double click, it will open in our web browser and you will see the
text that you wrote between the <body></body> tags.

In the browser tab you will see the text that’s between the <title></title> tags.

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<title>My First Web Page</title>
</head>
<body>
This is my first page. Now I’m going to learn some CSS to make things look a little better.
</body>
</html>
